Change Our World during COVID-19...with 1 act of kindness

By Chantal Jenoure
Non nobis solum nati sumus. (Not for ourselves alone are we born.)
― Marcus Tullius Cicero

We are living in seriously difficult times. Businesses are shuttering. Our very own neighbours are losing their jobs and thereby their means of providing for their families. I know as children, we all dreamed of changing the world, and as we have grown older, we have become acclimatized to the notion that we can’t do it and that aspiration was just the simple musing of an uninformed child.

As bad as things may seem, if we look around, we see companies coming up with simple ways to safeguard the longevity of their businesses. But, the question is, what small role can you play to help another person/family out during this time? What could be your act of thoughtfulness or generosity?

A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.

The other day I was blessed by the generosity of a previous manager, who I am happy to call a friend. Her thoughtful act was a couple mangoes and when I went to pick them up, I left with a bag of other goodies, which my family and I truly enjoyed. We were able to reciprocate her thoughtfulness by giving her a piece of pumpkin, which she ended up sharing with another colleague of hers.

When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.

Whether you believe it or not, simple acts of kindness will and does change our world...at the least our immediate world. And sometimes when we are not looking, that act creates a ripple effect of giving that we never saw coming, but increases the impact your one gesture created.

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
